Dar es Salaam is apparently growing at a stupendous pace. Old buildings are being demolished to make place for modern office towers. Dar-based Sarah Markes is freezing contemporary Dar in her sketches and already many colonial buildings have vanished. Because I like her sketches and because she was so kind to allow me to use some of them, I’ll make this post entirely about her. The sketchiness of her drawings is the perfect representation of my current state of mind: not yet there and already busy thinking about Dar but not yet able to fill in all the colors to my own sketchy imagination. Thank you Fabienne, for introducing me to Sarah’s work!
All drawings are from Sarah Markes (you can also find her on Facebook). In 2012 she published the 2nd edition of her book “Street Level” and is currently working on a book of sketches of the Tanzanian coast, which will be called “Sea Level”. You can find her work in Dar bookstores and on Amazon.
